The Greek Theatre of Taormina is one of the largest ancient theatres in Sicily, second only to the Greek Theatre of Syracuse. The original construction dates back to the 3rd century BC, as evidenced by the remains of the wall made of isodomic blocks incorporated into the stage building. During the Republican age or in the early Empire, the theatre underwent its first reconstruction, with the structure reaching 109 metres in diameter, an orchestra measuring 35 metres in diameter, and a seating capacity of 10,000 spectators. During the same period, the structure was adapted to host gladiator fights and wild beast shows. During the medieval period, it fell into real decline, with the stage building and the two turris scalae used to create a private palace.
During the Grand Tour, the Theatre experienced a new period of splendour thanks to its romantic fame as a ruined monument, surrounded by vegetation and offering an unusual view of Mount Etna. During the 20th century, its nature changed once again: the Theatre began to be used as an open-air venue. It hosts theatre performances, concerts, David di Donatello award ceremonies, symphonic concerts, operas, and ballet performances.
